How to Make Sun Tea
Sun tea is brewed slowly at ambient temperature rather than with boiling water, producing a milder, smoother cup over a few hours outdoors.
Ingredients (makes 1 litre)
- 4-5 teaspoons black or green tea
- 1 litre filtered water
- A large glass jar with a lid
Method
- Add the tea leaves to the jar and fill with cold, filtered water.
- Seal and place in direct sunlight for 3-5 hours, depending on how warm the day is.
- Bring the jar indoors once the tea has reached your preferred strength and colour.
- Strain out the leaves and refrigerate.
- Serve over ice, sweetened or plain.
A Safety Note
Because sun tea brews at warm, not boiling, temperatures, use a clean jar and fresh water, and refrigerate promptly once brewed and don't leave it sitting out longer than necessary. If in doubt, cold-brewing in the refrigerator is a safer alternative that achieves a similar smooth result.
